I am one of the co-founders of the travel community Travellerspoint. In 2007 we started our own wiki travel guide
, on code we created in-house (coldfusion). There's about 15 million characters in the guide currently, but we're hoping to break the 20 million mark early in 2010. It's a big push, but well worth it we feel. Some of the incentives we've tried include sharing revenues from advertising with active users, clearer attribution of top contributors, competitions, and donating to charity for meeting targets. We still haven't cracked the magic formula, but we will one day!!
One benefit of having written our own code is being able to simply link up the wiki content with other areas of our site, for example the budget accomodation pages
are linked with wiki pages for the same destination. We're also working on bringing it back even more on the home page and our forums, both of which are quite heavily used.
Anyway, look forward to getting to know this website a little more!
Sam
